Zante
Zante (or Zakynthos) is one of the lesser known of the Ionian Islands and is actually the third largest in terms of land mass and it has a long and intriguing history. The common English word Zante is taken from the Greek Zakynthos which in turn was taken from the name of an Arcadian Chief. The main industry on the island is now tourism and because of this you can be assured of a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere no matter where on Zante you explore. One of the things Zante is most historically famous for is its musical legacy, it was the site of the first music school in Greece and it was musicians from Zante who played at the first Olympic Games in 1896.
One of the main draws for tourists to Zante is the stunning scenery; the fertile lush plains that make up part of the southern reaches of the island are something of a rarity when compared to the other Ionian Islands, and the rugged mountains and steep cliffs on the west coast are perfect for exploring and adventuring. The National Marine Park of Zakynthos is a major tourist attraction thanks to the rare loggerhead turtles who visit the area to lay their eggs in the sandy beaches. There are many other stunning tourist attractions on Zante such as the world famous Shipwreck Bay (of which a stunning view can be attained on the ridge from Anafontria), the Blue Caves and Cape Skinari.
