Description

a beautiful stone cottage and private pool with outstanding views of the countryside. The cottage is situated in a picturesque, unspoilt Dordogne village. This two bedroom cottage has been meticulously renovated to a high standard by a French artisan and comprises a kitchen/diner/lounge area with rustically exposed stone walls, two bedrooms - one double, one twin - and a good sized shower room and toilet.

A salt water swimming pool of 4.5 metres x 9 metres has just been built, exclusively for your own personal use.

The cottage is situated in a lovely hamlet of 3 houses in the village of La Cassagne, which is located between Perigueux and Brive-la-Gaillarde. The two nearest towns are Terrasson and Salignac which offer shops and restaurants. The motorway is easily accessible to give you access to Bordeaux, Bergerac and Limoges Airports. Brive-la-Gaillarde and Limoges also have main line rail stations with routes to Paris and other main cities.

The cottage was built over 100 years ago in traditional limestone with oak beams. It was completely restored to a high standard by a local artisan around 8 years ago. It is situated in a small, quiet and friendly hamlet of 3 houses within the village of La Cassagne. The gated house and pool are on a hill overlooking the 12th Century Romanesque Church of the village and are surrounded by fields, woods and walnut groves. Being slightly biased, we think it would be hard to find a better location than this one. The gîte is quite simply situated in a lovely tranquil and idyllic location.

Main bedroom – This consists of a traditional French double bed, large wardrobe and drawers together with bedside tables and lamps, a linen basket and framed prints.

Second bedroom – This has two single beds, bedside cupboards and lamps, a wardrobe, drawers with mirrored top and a couple of framed prints.

Bathroom – Consists of a large shower cubicle with a glass door, toilet, sink and washing machine.

The main room – Comprises a well-equipped kitchen area with ample Chestnut cupboards and dishwasher; the dining area has a traditional pine table and chairs; the lounge area has 2 comfy sofas, a table and a large Chestnut corner cupboard.

Hot water and heating are produced by a central heating gas boiler. For the colder months, a woodburner has been added to the large ‘Inglenook style’ fireplace.

Linen - We will provide clean towels, sheets, kitchen linen and pool towels each week.

Swimming Pool – The Pool was finished in September 2009 and measures 9 x 4.5 metres. It is a salt water pool. The pool will be cleaned by the owner during the rental period. A solar shower is in the immediate pool area. A pool alarm has been installed to fulfil French legal requirements and, for your safety, must be kept on at all times.

For eating outside there is barbecue and picnic table close to the pool and the house.

The owner can be contacted in France during the summer

Market Days and Shopping – There are lots of interesting and varied markets to visit. They provide great opportunities to try France’s renowned cheeses and, of course, to practise your French, if you choose to, although the French are very helpful and will guide you.
Listed below are just a few markets to go to. In the summer months there are farmers markets in lovely little villages and towns during most days and some evenings:
St Genies – Sunday morning traditional market. You must visit this village and don’t forget your camera.
Sarlat – Saturdays and Wednesdays. Large, busy, very varied market in a medieval setting with fantastic architecture.
Montignac – Wednesday morning traditional market in this lovely little town. There are plenty of restaurants and places to eat and you can visit the famous caves of Lascaux.
Terrasson – Thursday morning varied market on the medieval bridge and surrounding streets and square
Le Lardin – Friday morning local market
Brive – Wednesdays and Saturdays – huge market selling everything. Brive also has plenty of shops and restaurants in the surrounding areas
Périgueux – Wednesdays and Saturdays are market days. Périgueux has many upmarket shops, restaurants and interesting architecture.

Towns and Villages nearby
St Genies, Archignac, Sarlat, Terrasson, Brive, Montignac, St Amand de Coly, Hautefort and Perigueux. These are just a few towns and villages that are worth visiting.

Countryside – The countryside around La Cassagne is simply beautiful and is fantastic for short and long walks. The countryside is varied with dense wood, walnut groves, and other farmed land. For the bird enthusiast, most noticeable are the buzzards that soar above, the owls and nightingales to be heard in the evening. Similar to the UK, one can purchase detailed maps (Carte Bleu) for walking around the surrounding area.

For those who are nocturnal, then don’t miss the wonderful clear skies to gaze at the amazing stars which feel really close to you.
