Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands situated to the west of Greece and it is a popular tourist destination that is achieving more and more international recognition with each passing year. The capital city of Kefalonia is Argostoli, a majestic and historic location that can be explored at your leisure when you stay in some of the holiday homes that the region has to offer. There are many interesting regions of Kefalonia to explore when you are on holiday; the mountains regions surrounding Mount Ainos are particularly popular due to their high elevation and spectacular viewpoints.
There are small patches of forested land on Kefalonia to explore and these are packed with a rich diversity of wildlife to experience when staying on Kefalonia. There are many natural tourist attractions; of particular note is the stunning Drogarati cave and the forested mountaintop of Ainos. Budding naturalists can experience the endangered loggerhead turtle on Kefalonia on Kaminia beach, and for amateur historians the long and intriguing history of Kefalonia has left a rich legacy to be explored.
There are a number of Roman excavations currently taking place that have been dated back as far as the second century BCE and many precious artifacts such as gold jewellery have been recovered. There are also several museums on Kefalonia, some of which are internationally recognised as centres of excellence. One of the main attractions of Kefalonia is that it caters for tourists and sightseers exceptionally well; whilst the Lassi area is one of the most popular there are also a large number of holiday home rentals away from the more popular resort regions if that is where your interests lie.
Whilst many tourists flock from Greece and Italy Kefalonia itself remains popular with visitors from around the globe all year round. From the stunning golden beaches to the deep mystical caves, from the highest mountain peaks to the forested regions below there is something on Kefalonia for everyone.
