Faro Island - This is near the airport and reached by a causeway

There are Islands off Olhao - a ferry ride (approx 20mins) to Armona or Culatra where you can while away many an hour on glorious sun-baked unspoilt beaches.

Fuzeta is a small seaside resort on the way up to Tavira

Pedras del Rei is home to a lovely beach which is accessed by a small gauge railway, it offers many a gastronomic delight with inexpensive restaurants, coffee bars and a beach shop .

The main beach is Praia da Rocha beach, it is long and wide and a favourite playground of the area.

Next is Praia do Vau beach which is wide open in parts but also has secluded sections.

Praia da Alvor is even longer than Praia da Rocha and usually not as populated.

The fourth largest beach of the area is Praia Grande across the River Arade at Ferragudo. To get there you have to walk, taxi or drive but it will be worth your while.

Wine Tasting - There are a number of establishments that offer free wine tasting. There is no obligation to buy but you will probably find a vintage wine, a port or a local liqueur to your taste. Brandymel, a mixture of brandy and honey is one example of a 100% locally made product.

Estoi, Moncharapacho, Tavira, St Catrina, and Loule all have quite large monthly markets. Olhao itself boasts a fine market each saturday incorporating a fish market. Further a field is the grand market of Portimao which is held the first Monday of each month.

Shopping - Faro, Olhao, Loule, Almancil are the nearest shopping centres with Faro now having a terrific new shopping mall, well worth a trip with lovely marble malls amid lots of fountains all open air. You will find all types of modern high street goods there.

Historic Interests - Estoi, the Roman ruins and Estoi Palace, Tavira Bridge and of course Faro Old town, it's so nice to sit in the square by the cathederal and have a cool drink!! Like all European countries Portugal has an abundance of old castles and fortunately for visitors to this region one of the most impressive and best preserved is only about an hours drive away dominating the skyline of Silves.

Originally a Moorish stronghold Silves castle was the scene of epic battles and sieges in the 12th and 13th centuries. You can walk freely around the grounds for spectacular views. Silves was once the capital of the Algarve and sailing ships used to moor in the harbour.
